I'm finally back in Atlanta. It's nice to be in my own place with all my own stuff, though I already miss my family. (Hi, Sis!) Loved being able to experience a white Christmas for the first time, especially playing with my nephew in the snow. Yesterday we went to see The Princess and the Frog, which was quite a darling movie. The flight home was uneventful -- the only evidence of any new security measures at DFW was that I was chosen for a pat-down after going through the metal detector. I asked the TSA agent if this was a random thing or if I should expect it from now on; several years ago, my name was flagged and I had to go through the secondary check every time I flew. But she said it was just a random thing because I happened to be wearing a bulky sweater (even though I wouldn't consider it very bulky.) Both DFW and ATL were fairly empty, which was a surprise during the holidays. Then again, I guess that's because I was flying on Monday afternoon. And now here I am, though for some reason I'm feeling rather twitchy tonight.
Not much else to tell, but I do have a ton of links to clear out of my bookmarks and Google Reader....
-- I laughed at this parody of those GAP ads with the little girls.
-- Several from the NYT: why do people shoplift books?, the glories of marching bands (I played bass clarinet for three years), and a fun essay by Mindy Kaling about imaginary families.
-- AdWeek lists the 30 freakiest commercials of 2009, and Salon has the best viral video of the decade.
-- Sepinwall has a long non-spoilery interview with David Tennant, and Vanity Fair interviews the rather kickass Rashida Jones.
-- Check out a wacky video of an octopus snatching a coconut.
-- I'm a few weeks late with this one, but Jason Segel wants female fans to call him for a good time.
-- Another oldie-but-goodie: the English to TXT-speak Translator.
-- Broadsheet wonders when we started sounding just like our mothers. God, I use so many of her phrases that drove me crazy as a kid.
-- Boston.com has a very cool picspam of 2009 in photography.
-- Celebrity Baby Names Blog awards the top celeb baby names of the year. I hope Bandit isn't a hint of things to come.
-- Miller-McCune discusses the end of handwriting.
-- Oddee offers ten cool stories - or cautionary tales - of when Facebook and real life overlap.
-- And since I'm going retro tonight, I can't resist another viewing of Alec Baldwin's Schweddy Balls.

There are all these “TV shows/ movies/ books of the decade” lists going around, so I figured I’d post my own versions of same. I’m going to start with TV, because it’s tv that brought me to LJ and I feel like that deserves to be commemorated. So, my tv shows of the decade (some of them started before the year 2000, but I’m bending the rules here a bit) are:
1. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” – specifically the Season 5 episode called “Fool for Love.” I watched “Buffy” since about episode 3 or so (because I loved Giles and recognized him from the Tasters’ Choice commercials he did – heh!) and always enjoyed it, but I never got upset about missing an episode here or there. ( Spoilers for season 3-4 ) But then I saw “Fool for Love” and it was just SO well done and wonderful that I was in love with the show and that led me to online message boards such as the TWOP (formerly MBTV) message boards which in turn led me to LJ. So as much as I parted ways with BTVS eventually (season 7, OY!), I will still always think of the show (and especially this one episode!) as my gateway to a whole bunch of amazing friendships (and other great tv shows and books and movies.)
2. “Angel” – the spinoff of “Buffy” which I actually ended up liking a whole lot more than its parent show – is another one of my “shows of the decade.” I’m trying to think of one single episode that is my favorite, which is quite difficult, but I think it might be “Are You Now or Have You Ever Been …?” from Season 2. My runner-up favorite episode is probably the season opener of season 4 and its bookend, the finale of Season 4, which both deal with families, real and imagined, and how they can be broken apart into a million pieces and the price of fixing them.
3. I came to “Farscape” because so many of my friends who loved “Buffy” and “Angel” were posting about their misery at its cancellation. So I’d never seen a single episode until after just about all of the show had aired, but I made up for lost time by watching the entire run of the series as SyFy (then SciFi!) re-aired the episodes. And I LOVED the show – I feel in love with Aeryn Sun from the get-go, but soon enough I boarded the Everyone Else Including the Muppets Love Train. It’s difficult to pick a favorite episode so I’m going with the two-part “Into the Lion’s Den” towards the very end of Season 3. ( Spoilers )
4. “Battlestar Galactica” was the first show after the end of “Angel” about which I got COMPLETELY obsessive. And for a while, it was one of the most amazing tv shows I’d ever seen – I truly felt it was brilliant for about 27-28 episodes and even afterwards, there were moments that took my breath away (even in seasons 4 and 4.5 which I generally didn’t love.) But even more important than the intrinsic quality of the show is the fact that BSG introduced me to an enormous percentage of my fabulous friends' list, so like “Buffy”, I’ll treasure the memories, good and bad! My favorite episode: it was a tie between “Pegasus” and “Kobol’s Last Gleaming” (both parts) but KLG wins because the teaser to Part 1 is basically just a perfect five minutes of TV and the ending of Part 2 is mysterious, beautiful, powerful and moving as well as one hell of a nasty cliffhanger!
5. “The Wire” – OK, I keep saying the Best TV Show Ever and I basically have no caveats to this. With other tv shows, I say things like “well, you know, I like this because of this thing or that thing so I can overlook some less stellar parts, etc..” but “The Wire” was five seasons of concentrated excellence – plot, character, writing, acting, cinematography, all brilliant! I don’t even know how to pick a favorite episode from this show, because – as one of the characters says – “it’s all connected.” BUT I think I will go for the penultimate episode of Season 3 when ( Spoilers ) and probably the penultimate episode of Season 4 as well, although that one is so heartbreaking that I actually don’t know if it’s a favorite. (I mean, I like getting my heart ripped out by my “entertainment” but …)
6. It’s been a long time since I watched “Deadwood” (time for a rewatch in 2010, methinks!) so things are a bit fuzzy for me here, but I think probably the Season 1 finale wins my favorite episode for the show. There were other worthy contenders, but ( Spoilers )
7. “Rome” – I know it wasn’t entirely accurate historically and the second season was really rushed, but man, did I love Vorenus and Pullo, separately and apart. (And I also ADORED Ciaran Hinds as Caesar.) I actually have three favorite episodes: from Season 1, “The Spoils” and “The Kalends of February”( Spoilers ); and from Season 2, the first episode, “Passover”( Spoilers )
8. “Friday Night Lights” – This is another show that I owe to my friends’ list. Because you can add me to the ranks of people who thought: “A show about high school football in Texas? Why would I EVER want to watch that?” But thanks to all of you who raved about it constantly, I decided to buy the DVDs (for only $20) in the summer of 2007 and it was love at first sight. Like Coach and Tami’s marriage, we’re still going strong four seasons along (despite some difficulties during Season 2.) My favorite episode a couple of months ago probably would have been “State”, the season finale of Season 1, or “Underdogs”, the penultimate episode of Season 3, but although both of these episodes are stellar, they’ve been eclipsed by season 4’s “The Son” which is one of the most brilliant hours of tv I’ve ever seen. ( Spoilers for FNL 4.5 )
9.“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” – yet another show I watched because my f-list raved about it. Are we sensing a pattern here? Well, I’m not too proud to admit it, because Sarah Connor (and “Sarah Connor”) were both awesome! I’d only seen bits and pieces of the films and didn’t love them, so I kind of came at this show with, I think, fresh eyes and not that much immersion in the mythos. And I thought this show about cyborgs from the future did this amazing job of making us think about what it means to be human and whether any ends justify the means and how you handle the knowledge of your own fate. (Not to mention the fact that it made Brian Austin Green – yes, really!! – hot. How amazing is that? Plus, as much as I loved Garrett Dillahunt on “Deadwood,” I think he was even more amazing as John Henry on this show! And Summer Glau was brilliant, as was, IMO, Lena Headey.)
My favorite episodes are hard to pin down because there were so many things I liked about every single episode at all, but I’ll go with the season 1 finale and the opener of Season 2 which follows directly upon the events of the season 1 finale. And probably my absolutely favorite episode was the penultimate one even though I sort of hated it at the time, in which ( Spoilers ) I still haven’t seen the series (SOB!) finale yet, although I do know what happens, because in my head, as long as I don’t watch it, the show was never cancelled. (I KNOW! Weird!)
10. My 10th show … Oh, this one’s tricky, because I kind of want to put “Arrested Development” on here somewhere (I do love that show!) but … I think I’m going with “Veronica Mars” instead. Yet again, this was something where I watched a couple of episodes when it first aired, and then didn’t really care for it, and stopped watching, only to be convinced later on by several LJ friends (you know who you are!!) that it was worth watching and then I found the DVDs for cheap at Target and … there you go! I actually did like Seasons 2 and 3, but Season 1 stands apart as something special, and my favorite episode of the series is the penultimate one of Season 1 – “A Trip to the Dentist” – in which Veronica finally learns ( Spoilers ) I actually like this episode more than the finale, which I thought relied too much on coincidence and Veronica being uncharacteristically stupid about doing things like leaving her car-doors unlocked.

Since I’ve never worked up the nerve to actually participate in Yuletide, I admit that it's a bit cavalier of me to complain about Yuletide-related things. Having said that (yes, I did just watch all of Season 7 of "Curb Your Enthusiasm"!), I must admit to a bit of disappointment that there was only one (one!!!!) ASOIAF story involving Jaime Lannister and that all the FNL stories seemed to be about Tim Riggins (I like him, but … not that much, you know?) HOWEVER, I just read this amazing story about Erda and Wotan set in the world of Wagner’s “Ring” (and recommended by
selenak and it’s one of those stories I wish I had written, you know? (Also, it reminds me of one of my favorite stories ever, which is Wayfarer’s Daughter by
meyerlemon. In fact, the two go together really, really well, sort of like Valkyries and horned helmets!!
ETA: Also, a "Children of Dune" story with DUNCAN! YAY!

Hello!
I'm considering buying the American (I'm Australian) Complete Series box set from Amazon, but I've heard bad things about the packaging/quality of the set, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they thought of it? It's an awful lot of money and I'm not sure I want to commit to it right away.
Also, on the very off chance, does anyone own the Australian version of the Complete Series? It looks to me like it skimps on special features, but it could just be bad marketing.
Thanks for help in advance.
